US (2024)

This work illustrates my mother at around my age, in her hometown. The cloth that cradles her is representative of myself: it is unique to and from my mother’s province (Guizhou), and it was brought to the US upon my birth. US also refers to the relationship between my mother and I as we approach the same age, with overlapping and intertwining experiences and cultures.

Here, I attempted meshing digital with traditional art. I made the panel's image in black-and-white in Photoshop, then printed and transferred the image onto paper using layers of gel matte medium. I layered color pencils on top, and enhanced the piece’s saturation by rubbing several layers of walnut oil into it.
