Georg Hegel, German idealist, termed self-consciousness as an interactive, constructive experience, “which depends upon the pre-existence of other selves, which themselves do not become selves until they recognize themselves in others”. Each of us encounter millions of decisions daily, with each one branching out into separate ‘perhaps’ questions, separate possibilities, and eventually, the butterfly effect speculates, wildly separate lives or even selves. Liu is inquisitive of this thought through the lens of her own identity, visually, creating imitations of herself, as well as conceptually: perhaps her other existence, assembled from other choices, had pursued an opposite path. Liu’s portrayal of scattered lines across a flowing world invites us to consider the endlessness of possibilities.
